Breaking: Facebook looks to locate 400-acre data center in local area

Since the State of the County address by Walton County Chairman Kevin Little, everybody has been anticipating an announcement that “something big” was coming to the Walton County business community in the near future. At the time Little said he couldn’t announce it, and possibly still can’t, but he had difficulty containing his excitement about it. The Atlanta Business Chronicle, however, leaked a story this morning that is likely the big announcement, although local officials remain tight lipped at the moment.

“Facebook could invest about $20 billion over two decades in the data center east of Covington, Ga,”  Bizjounals posted on its website Tuesday. If that is indeed the big announcement, this is a huge investment for the local area. Walton County Development Authority Director Shane Short declined to comment when asked about it Tuesday morning, but it would appear that an announcement of something is likely imminent.

A Joint Development Authority, owned by the Counties of Walton, Newton, Jasper and Morgan that developed Stanton Springs, a planned community that is home to Shire, is likely involved in the investment being reported in the Atlanta Business Chronicle. According to the report, Facebook is expected to invest billions in a 400-acre data center in the area.

More details to follow.
